Since year 2002, HAWCA had four literacy centers in the following areas of Kabul:

1- Qala-e-Nazir
2- Sarasyab
3- Qala-e-Alimardan
4- Walayatee, Bagrami District

Each center had a number of 200 students that composed of women and overaged girls.

The areas where the literacy centers were basically where households of daily laborers, shopkeepers of Kabul’s old city and government employees live. Men are involved in the above mentioned activities, while women in this area are very often at home and are predominantly involved in small home-based businesses such as embroidery, knitting beads, and carpet weaving which generate a little income for the family. A number of children in the area are working children as well. Male children often work as ‘apprentices’ to shopkeepers, mechanics, etc, while female children are largely involved with carpet weaving.
